Meet Dr. John Kaya
Dr. John Kaya is a graduate of Moanalua High School. He graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor of Education in 1989, then graduated from University of Minnesota with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. During Veterinary school, Dr. Kaya did an externship at the San Diego Zoo fostering his interest in exotic animal medicine. He currently treats dogs, cats, rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rats, mice, Jackson chameleons, turtles, and birds. On occasion, he has even seen goats, penguins, and flamingos.
Dr. Kaya is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. He is also a former Chairperson of the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners for the state of Hawaii.
Besides working in the hospital, Dr. Kaya has been very active in the community. He has visited schools educating children on proper pet care, was a fixture on the KHON morning news pet segment, and wrote articles for our local MidWeek newspaper. In his free time, Dr. Kaya enjoys basketball, skin diving, and singing karaoke with his friends and family. He loves spending time with his wife Jan and two children, Jada and Jake. Dr. Kaya’s immediate family includes two Pomeranians, Eevee and Arya, and a turtle named Lil’ Dude.
Meet Dr. Makoto Sakamoto
Dr. Makoto Sakamoto was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. He first moved to the U.S. when he was 11 years old, and has been going back and forth between the two countries ever since. Dr. Sakamoto graduated from Tufts University in Massachusetts with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and has been living in Oahu since graduation. He is very grateful to be living in the state of Hawaii, surrounded by great people and the environment. Dr. Sakamoto currently lives with his wife Julia, daughter Shiori, cat Fuyumi, and dog Kei… with more members of the family joining in the future! He likes to spend his free time surfing, playing board games, and spending time with his family and friends.
Before joining Aina Haina Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Makoto Sakamoto worked at Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic as a general practitioner. His passion in veterinary medicine includes primary care, behavioral medicine, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry. He is fluent in Japanese and would be more than happy to discuss pet’s concerns with clients who prefer to speak Japanese over English. 日本語での対応もしていますので、気軽にお尋ねください。
Meet Dr. Jonathan Onaga
Dr. Jonathan Onaga was born and raised in Mililani. He is a graduate of Punahou School and went on to study at the University of California, Irvine where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Onaga returned home to pursue a Master’s Degree in Animals Sciences from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University and returned home to practice companion animal Veterinary medicine. Dr. Onaga believes strongly in keeping our pets healthy through preventative care and working closely with clients to help improve their knowledge and relationship with their pets.
Dr. Onaga enjoys spending time with friends on the golf course or out fishing and diving to try to catch fish for dinner. He also enjoys taking care of his dog Maple, a stubborn but lovable Norwich Terrier.
Meet Dr. Allen Takayama
Dr. Allen has been a veterinarian for over 33 years. After graduating from Iolani School, Dr. Allen went on to the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He continued working with his father at Aina Haina Pet Hospital as a kennel technician and veterinary assistant and realized that working with animals was his passion. Dr. Allen then moved to Iowa and achieved degrees in a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University. He returned to Aina Haina Pet Hospital as a veterinarian in 1990 but had to move the practice to Kaimuki. He has now joined the Aina Haina Veterinary Clinic and is back in Aina Haina. Dr. Allen is married to Cathy and has 3 children and 3 rescued cats named Bear, Buster and Amber.
